Good idea. After you read my articles, please tell me where and why I am wrong.
I did not touch the NorthStream subject in my writing. You pointed me to an article written by someone who hates America or was paid by Russians.
If Russia did not use oil and gas to subdue Ukraine, the NorthStream would not been needed. Poland highly depends on Russian gas and oil. From an economic perspective, it is the easiest and cheapest to get it from there, if not the fears that Russia could use it as a political tool, as it did.
It is the cheapest energy source for Germany as well. Contrary to Poles or Ukrainians, Germans do not worry that Russia might try to extend its sphere of influence over their territory. So they went with buying Russian gas bypassing Poland and Ukraine. It was after Russia proved its imperial intentions in 2014.
The cheapest way to increase the capacity for gas delivery to Germany would be by adding additional pipes to the existing “Friendship” pipeline, which goes through Poland. But it makes no sense if Russia had hostile intentions over Poland. For this reason, Poland sees North Stream as Germany’s betrayal of European security. As long as Europe does not have political guarantees that Russia would not use gas and oil to expand its undue imperial ambitions, Europe needs to have diversified energy sources and be capable of surviving for an extended time without Russian energy if needed. Polish lobbying on this matter resonated in Washington. First, it could keep the aggressiveness of Russia in check. Second, being an alternative vendor of gas and oil to Europe is good for American business.
