I agree with your reasoning. Selfishness is not what Ayn Rand recommends. She just sees it as a treat of human personality, something we all have, but many are in denial. To succeed, we depend on the cooperation of others; hence, social behavior is in our best self-interest.

I can think about better ways of helping homeless people than by paying more in taxes, but it is a subject for another conversation.
