Medium has a dilemma: is it for aspiring writers or readers seeking information outside the mainstream media?
Aspiring writers are more likely to pay the membership fee, hoping to gain popularity. Medium’s leadership seems to assist that group. As a result, I get mostly trivia in Medium daily recommendations as a reader. And most likely will not renew my membership.
If Medium saw its mission in supplementing information during the historically lowest trust of the mainstream media, it would promote high-quality writing. Yes, only a narrow group of writers would benefit. But if they would be really good, the membership would be much bigger. It would be an opportunity for aspiring writers to hone their skills and build their niche.
Unfortunately, writing is like singing. Most of us like to sing, but only very few have the talent, and even fewer have the endurance to work on it, so only a very few go to the top.
