Medium’s original sin or weakness is that its founder, EV Williams, does not see it as a profitable business venture but as a venue to propagate his ideas. I explain that in “Medium needs Robert Townsend as the CEO.”
People distrust the media, and Medium has a tremendous opportunity to cash in by offering what people cannot get from the mainstream media giants.
Take a war in Ukraine, for example. Please check my latest article. One cannot find that kind of reasoning in the Wall Street Journal or The New York Times, on CNN or Fox News. I see at least several writers reporting competently on Medium about different aspects of the war. Some articles repeat the misinformation.
If it were up to me, I would promote a few controversial articles and ask others to write polemics. I would make Medium the place where nationwide discussion about the war in Ukraine is going on. Now some articles relate to what other media outlets are saying. I would make discussions on Medium relevant, so the mainstream media would report about discussions on Medium.
I would apply the same approach to all subjects the audience might be interested in. I would market Medium as a place where an informed person has to be. They would come, they would read, and you and others would get real money.
