Nothing new.

After WWI, the big business wanted to get back into Russia. Germany had the potential to overcome the Soviets, so Hitler got help. The demons he had awakened were not in the plan.

When it became obvious that Hitler might be a problem, the Polish Chief of State, Józef Piłsudski, suggested that the League of Nations would intervene militarily and stop Germany from breaching the Treaty of Versailles. He was dismissed for his anti-German bias. Conveniently for Hitler, Piłsudski got cancer and died in 1935.

The west miscalculated that Germany would not become so criminal as Hitler openly claimed he wanted it to be. Soviets’ objective was to expand west to regain control of the territories held by Russia before WWI. War was unavoidable.
