Poor-quality writing is unavoidable in an open format like Medium has. Even worse, it always will be the mass. Good quality writing will be a narrow minority. The quality of readers' experience is in what Medium editors recommend in the Medium Daily Digest. So far, I find there many worse articles than those written by AI.
