The title of the first part is discouraging: “Russia 1985-1999. What it felt like to live through the collapse of communism and democracy.”

There was no communism there; it was socialism. The official name was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. I wrote an essay explaining that common mistake: "Capitalism, socialism and communism.” There was no democracy there either. Never. The attempts to introduce it in a society foreign to the concept failed.
