There is no mystery. Print media have been declining because the mainstream media offer too much trivia and elitists editorial writing. Trivia is like a cookie we know we should not eat, but we eat it anyway. But we cannot stay healthy eating sweets only. Elitist editorial writing boils down to lecturing us what we should think. Who likes that?

Medium’s format provides an opportunity to break this conundrum. There is no way to avoid trivia; I read some of it. But it is a dessert. Ev tried to offer us a steak by repeating the same mistake that failed newspapers have been making. He failed as well.

Mediums’ opportunity is in creating a community where authors of diverse views confront each other. A few weeks ago, I co-founded a new publication on Medium devoted to debates among writers and readers, https://virtualagora.us/. In the beginning, we focus on immigration, a hot political issue now.

The purpose is not to tell readers what to think. Our goal is to have texts presenting the full spectrum of views on the subject. We encourage polemic between authors and articles responding to readers’ comments. We believe that an inquiring reader will appreciate the full spectrum of opinions and arguments in one place.

There is no tradition of doing what we try to do. We have patience and persistence. Please contribute with your articles or comments.

Many tell us what to think. I write to ask you to inquire. Question me. Have fun. Contact: hak1010@yahoo.com.
