You are correct that we are social animals and human relationships give meaning to our lives.

But, let us assume that within the next minute or so a tornado destroys all your possessions, and let us assume that you are one of those Americans who do not have even $400 for unexpected expenses. I hope you are not. Then, how others can help you if they are borderline homeless and penniless? Read about catastrophic events as earthquakes or floods in poor countries. People there are full of compassion, but it takes them decades to rebuild because they are short of cash.
