I started my political writing in the early 1970s in Poland. I had a "friend," an apparatchik, who always reminded me that my writing can earn me the lifelong free vacations among polar bears.

The real friend, who already had more serious problems as a political writer, warned me "do not become a martyr." It worked well for me. Sadly, others did not get that advice.
