You sound like a typical American who does not know history.
Why did the Romans build the Colosseum?
Framers made Rome wealthy. Then, the rich in Rome manipulated politics, kicked out farmers from their land, and had slaves working the soil. As a result, in the city of Rome, there always was a great population of unemployed citizens. To prevent them from revolting, the rulers provided bread and circuses. The Colosseum was the rational solution.
Capitalists would build not-so-impressive factories and give people jobs. Then, enriched, people could entertain themselves in any way they please.
