Your article is important because, for westerners, freedom just is. People do not think about it. Occasionally, we might talk about some nuances. But freedom is not given once forever. It is continuously changing.

I like the Marxists’ definition of freedom that it is an accepted necessity. We feel free when we do not feel constrained by its restrictions. We do not feel deprived of our freedom when forced to stop at the red light and allowed to move at the green one. We see it as liberty for safer traveling in the urban surroundings.

But under the pretense of safety or equality, new rules are implemented that many of us do not accept as a necessity. Immigration laws are a good example. For some of us, the hiring of foreigners is our freedom of pursuing our life objectives. Others see it as depriving them of getting jobs that foreigners take. Some do not want to have foreigners as their neighbors.

People in societies with significant restrictions on freedom value freedom the most. I had that kind of experience when growing up in the Soviet-dominated country. From that perspective, I can see sharper how some well-intended regulations gradually limit the liberties of Americans in the United States today. We are on a slippery slope.
