NATO survived beyond the fall of the Soviet Union mostly because of countries like Poland, which worried about the resurgence of Russian imperialism for the reasons I explained in this text.

No one seriously even mentioned Ukraine joining NATO until 2014, when it became obvious that Ukraine might not survive without NATO’s protection.
